On June 12, 2026, members of the Quickcarinsure.co.uk team rolled up their sleeves and headed out to the stunning Smithills Estate in Bolton. Our mission? To support the Woodland Trust in their vital conservation efforts by helping clear the highly invasive Himalayan Balsam plant from the site.

Located in Bolton and sitting in the shadow of the landmark Winter Hill broadcasting mast, the Smithills Estate holds a special title: it is the largest single site ever acquired by the Woodland Trust in England.

Spanning an impressive landscape equivalent to roughly 900 football pitches, the estate boasts a rich biodiversity of:

• Rolling grasslands and active farmlands

• Atmospheric moorlands and deep ravines

• Vital peat bog habitats

Offering breathtaking panoramic views over Bolton and Greater Manchester, the Woodland Trust has been actively transforming this space since 2015, planting over 130,000 trees. The ongoing restoration and revitalisation projects make it an incredible, evolving place for the public to visit.

The Threat of Himalayan Balsam: Why Conservation Matters

Despite its attractive pink flowers, Himalayan Balsam (Impatiens glandulifera) is a major ecological threat in the UK. Originally introduced to Britain from the western Himalayas in 1839, this fast-growing annual plant has become a problematic invasive species.

Why is it dangerous to UK wildlife?

• Rapid Growth: It can quickly shoot up to heights of 2.5 metres, forming dense, towering thickets.

• Smothering Native Flora: By creating thick canopy layers, it completely blocks out sunlight, smothering and outcompeting native British plants and reducing local biodiversity.

• Legal Restrictions: Under The Invasive Alien Species (Enforcement and Permitting) Order 2019, it is a strict legal offence to plant or intentionally cause Himalayan Balsam to grow in the wild.

The absolute best window for controlling this invasive species is in early summer before its flowers fully bloom (which happens continuously from June to October). Pulling the plants up early prevents explosive seed pods from developing, drastically halting its spread.

By pulling up these invasive weeds, our team helped protect local habitats, ensuring that indigenous wildflowers and wildlife have the space, nutrients, and sunlight they need to thrive for generations to come.
